Flying a ULM
ULM flying offers an accessible way to take to the skies yourself. Anyone who wants to fly a ULM in Belgium must comply with a clear legal framework. This determines, among other things, which licence is required, how the training is organised, which classes and aircraft you may fly, and which conditions a pilot must continue to meet.
Belgian regulations distinguish four ULM classes: ULA (ultralight powered aeroplane), DPM (delta wing), ULH (ultralight powered helicopter) and autogyro. A ULM licence is linked to one or more of these class ratings and to specific privileges.
To fly a ULM registered in Belgium, the pilot must hold a ULM licence, the applicable class rating and privileges, and a valid Class 1, Class 2 or LAPL medical certificate. Separate conditions apply to student pilots during training.

I already hold a ULM licence
Having obtained a ULM licence does not mean that all flying privileges can automatically be exercised without limit. The regulations set conditions regarding medical fitness, recent flying experience, refresher training and the retention of specific privileges.
For an active ULM pilot, the following are important, among other things:
- the validity of the medical certificate;
- retaining the class rating;
- the required number of flight hours, take-offs and landings;
- the periodic refresher training with an instructor;
- retaining additional privileges;
- the correct recording of flights in the logbook;
- the procedure when the experience requirements are no longer met;
- notifying the BCAA of revalidations.
If a mandatory refresher training was not carried out within the prescribed period, the privileges concerned may only be exercised again once the reinstatement conditions of the Royal Decree have been met. The Royal Decree also stipulates that every revalidation of a class rating must be reported to the BCAA.
